REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized the importance of healthy competition among rice mills, whether small, medium, or large. The government, according to Amran, will continue to encourage fair competition in the field. Amran explained that currently there are three clusters of rice mills, namely 161 thousand small units, 7,300 medium units, and 1,065 large units. The milling capacity of each reaches 116 million tons for small mills, 21 million tons for medium mills, and 30 million tons for large mills. Meanwhile, national rice production is only around 65 million tons. This condition causes the milling capacity to far exceed production, leading to many mills not operating optimally.
