Microalgae to solve the fuel issue? A new method for creating biodiesel proposed in the Russian Federation

Scientists from the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, along with colleagues from Moscow and St. Petersburg, have proposed creating biodiesel using Scenedesmus microalgae. Ecologically clean motor fuel can replace petrochemical diesel fuel, which could help overcome the global energy crisis, according to the researchers. This was reported by RIA "Novosti" with reference to a scientific publication in Research Square. Biodiesel fuel is created through the chemical processing of vegetable oils or animal fats. Its advantages include non-toxicity, high lubricity, and biodegradability. Moreover, it can operate in modern diesel engines without the need for additional modifications. A mixture of biodiesel and fossil diesel fuel is widely used as a transport fuel in Italy, Germany, and Malaysia.
