Gyeongnam Province Operates a Special Quarantine Period Until February Next Year Blocking the entry of livestock vehicles at 10 migratory bird sites Maintaining a disease-free status for 12 years with continuous ASF control throughout the year [Yonhap News Archive Photo] (Changwon=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Jung-hoon — Gyeongnam Province announced on the 4th that it will operate a special quarantine period for five months from October until the end of February next year, ahead of the winter season. During this period, the province will activate a 24-hour emergency quarantine system to prevent highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) and foot-and-mouth disease, which pose increased risks during the winter. Last winter, a total of 62 AI cases occurred nationwide, but the number in Gyeongnam was limited to just one case. First, to prevent AI transmitted by migratory birds, the province has blocked the entry of livestock vehicles into 10 migratory bird sites across seven cities and counties since the 1st. Additionally, it will restrict duck farming, which shows few symptoms even if infected, at farms near migratory bird sites or those that have experienced AI outbreaks in the past five years. A pilot unmanned control station will be installed this year at farms with over 200,000 laying hens, allowing only disinfected vehicles to enter. Foot-and-mouth disease, which affects cattle, pigs, and goats, resulted in 13 cases at livestock farms nationwide, including Incheon, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongbuk this year. Gyeongnam has maintained its status as a disease-free region for 12 years since 2014. The province will utilize the National Livestock Disease Control System to reinforce vaccinations for livestock that missed the nationwide AI vaccination campaign and will strengthen environmental inspections at slaughterhouses and milk collection centers. Furthermore, it will restrict the movement of cattle, pigs, and manure, identified as major sources of foot-and-mouth disease spread, outside the Gyeongnam region. The province will continue year-round control of African swine fever (ASF), which occurs regardless of the season. Although five ASF cases occurred at pig farms in Gyeongnam between February and March this year, no additional cases have been reported since then due to thorough quarantine measures. seaman@yna.co.kr
